Meyer Products was born in 1926 in Newburgh, New York.
Meyer Products was born in 1926 in Newburgh, New York.

The city of Newburgh, situated inside New York’s Orange County, sits a little over an hour away from Manhattan. The area is known its role in American television history with RCA and WNBC New York in 1939, as well as being one of the first American cities to fluoridate its water in 1945. It is also the birthplace of Meyer Products, one of the world’s top leading names in high performance snow and ice management equipment.

Inventor Edward B. Meyer created the first Meyer snow plow by attaching a wedge to the front of his 1926 Buick.

The year is 1926. Some time before the arrival of mass-produced television sets and fluoridated water, a particularly nasty Winter storm had pummeled Newburgh overnight and left the entire town blanketed underneath heavy snow. Not satisfied with having wait for public services to arrive and clear the snow, local resident (and future Meyer Products company founder) Edward B. Meyer took it upon himself to tackle the snow-blocked streets himself. By attaching a wooden moldboard to the front of his Buick to act as a cutting wedge, Mr. Meyer cleared his driveway and the nearby streets. His drive and ingenuity had attracted the attention of local newspapers and soon, other neighboring residents whom have read his story began inquiring as to how they could obtain such a product for their own. Thus, Meyer Products was born and the company immediately went to work updating the original plow design for a mass market. The small plow, which was initially intended for personal automobile use, was upgraded to fit light duty trucks and, over time, re-engineered to fit commercial grade vehicles.

During the mid-to-late 1960s, Meyer Products had become the go-to name in professional snow and ice removal machinery. By 1965, many auto dealerships were selling Meyer plows in the same showrooms as their brand new cars and trucks. 1969 saw the launch of two of Meyer’s most storied innovations, the heavy-duty “Husky” plow with the hydraulic “Power Angling” system and the T6 Electrolift, an evolution of the first 1930 T-series electric hydraulic lift that replaced the hand-operated hydraulic jack from 1928. In the 1970s, Meyer Products introduced their compact “Mini Spreader” salt spreader for small trucks and began adding auxiliary headlights to their plows. Both innovations would go on to become some of the most important contributions to the snow plow manufacturing industry. Meyer snow plows were now being exported into Europe to meet international demand and throughout the next three decades, the company would continue to create new and inventive control systems, mounting brackets, and accessories for plows.

Meyer Products is now a part of Switzerland’s Aebi Schmidt Holding AG, the ASH Group. The ASH Group is a world renowned developer of infrastructural and agricultural product systems and services.
