Western Products, makers of the popular line Western snow plows and salt spreaders, is one of the three snow and ice control brands of Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Douglas Dynamics. Douglas Dynamics is North America’s premier manufacturer and upfitter of auxiliary equipment for commercial vehicles.

Western Products was born on September 5th, 1950 by founder Douglas Seaman.

The story of Western Products begins in September of 1950. Businessman Douglas Seaman purchased a small machine shop in Milwaukee called Western Welding & Manufacturing, a company that was founded 7 years prior. At the time, Western Welding & Manufacturing was known for being summoned and contracted out by large scale manufacturers for small, one-off welding jobs. A suggestion from a friend motivated Douglas Seaman to include snow plow production as a way to diversify the business. This led to the creation of the very first Western snow plow in 1952. The timing couldn’t be more perfect as the U.S. population was now gravitating towards settling in suburban areas which led to a market spike for light duty trucks. This, in turn, led to an increased demand for truck-mountable snow plows.

The Western Heavyweight still utilizes the original Unimount mounting design from 1989.

The light duty truck market flourished throughout the following three decades, as did the demand for snow plows. Population growth coupled with gradually worsening Winter weather conditions throughout the country bolstered Western Products’s market presence and cemented their success over the years. In 1977, Douglas Seaman created and incorporated Douglas Dynamics which became the new parent company for Western. Seven years later, Douglas Dynamics was able to acquire Fisher Engineering a top snow plow competitor to Western Products. With Western Products and Fisher Engineering now under the Douglas Dynamics umbrella, the company was set to dominate the snow and ice control market and in 1989, their most revolutionary invention to date came in the form of the Western Unimount snow plow. The Unimount went on to become one of the most trusted and most successful snow plow designs in America and was a favorite weapon among municipal contractors, professional commercial drivers, and homeowners in the war against Winter weather. This was succeeded by the Western Ultramount and Ultramount 2 plow mounting systems that, unlike the single piece mounting design of the Unimount, the Ultramount features universal weld-on mounting intended for larger, medium-duty trucks. The Heavyweight plow series still features the Unimount system but, like the Ultramount, it is designed for trucks in the 14,000-27,000 GVW range.

65 years later, Western Plows are still well-regarded by American plow drivers.
