Starters for White Commercial Planters

Founded in 1900, the White Motor Company was an American auto manufacturer that came to prominence in the early 20th century alongside such marques as Ford, Buick, and Cadillac. Cars, trucks, buses, and farm tractors were the company’s specialty products, although they did also manufacture bicycles, roller skates, automatic lathe machines, and sewing machines for a while. White Motor Company’s venture into motor vehicles began with steam powered engines and then moved to gasoline models, which sparked founder Rollin H. White’s interest in tractors. The tractor business led White Motor Company to become a leading manufacturer of heavy duty trucks and buses. At one point in time, 10% of all trucks made in the U.S. came from White Motor Company. This success allowed White to purchase the Autocar Company and, thanks to a business relationship with Freightliner and their parent company, Consolidated Freightways, build trucks under the White, Autocar, and Western Star brands in addition to distributing Freightliner trucks. However, in 1980, White Motor Company was purchased by Volvo. The Western Star brand was sold in Canada and Daimler AG eventually took control of Freightliner. In 1988, Volvo and General Motors merged their heavy truck divisions until Volvo bought back their stake from General Motors. Volvo would ultimately discontinue any White-branded models and rename them under the Volvo name. The remnants of White Motor Company’s agricultural division were in a former White subsidiary called White Farm Equipment. White Farm Equipment went away in 2001 and the only current products bearing the White name are a line of corn planters made by AGCO and garden tractors from MTD Products.
