Starters for Deutz Agricultural Engines by KHD

Germany’s KHD Humboldt Wedag (formerly, Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz) was originally known as Deutz AG. Deutz began life in 1864 as N.A. Otto & Cie by inventor Nikolaus Otto. Otto created the world’s first 4-stroke internal combustion engine. Otto and his partner, Eugen Langen, were only interested in producing stationary engines, but eventually expanded their manufacturing to include combine harvesters, tractors, heavy duty trucks, and buses. A consortium was founded with Motorenfabrik Oberusel AG in 1921 and N.A. Otto & Cie became Deutz AG. Deutz AG began to purchase various other German manufacturing companies, thus becoming one of Germany’s largest Aktiengesellschaften (AG, or publically-traded joint stock company). They’ve covered all sectors of the engine industry from automobiles to railways to ships to aviation. During World War II, Deutz AG became Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD), building arillerty for the Wehrmacht. After the war, KHD rebuilt and resumed acquiring even more German manufacturing firms. Fahr, a German manufacturer of farm equipment and tractors, was purchased by KHD in 1961. The company’s name was changed to Deutz-Fahr in 1968 and in 1977, total control of Fahr’s pre-existing factories and business operations were fully transferred over to KHD. Deutz-Fahr built engines and agricultural equipment up until 1995, when it joined Italy’s SDF Group. KHD continues to manufacture engines under the Deutz AG brand name.
