Starters for Lister Petter Industrial Engines

Lister Petter is an industrial engine manufacturer headquartered in Birmingham, England. Lister Petter descends from the original RA Lister & Company, founded in 1867. RA Lister & Company began by making milk churns based off of a new type of cream separator designed by Danish engineer Mikael Pedersen. Founder Robert Ashton Lister acquired the UK rights to produce and sell Pedersen’s machine, known throughout the British Empire as “The Alexandra Cream Separator.” The success of this separator led to Lister redesigning it and assimilating its inner workings into a new series of sheep shearing machinery. Lister went on to incorporate water and steam engines into the company’s range of products. In 1909, RA Lister & Company was introduced to petrol-powered engines and, later, diesel engines. Their most successful engine was the D-type engine, which debuted in 1931. Lister engines gained a reputation for being durable and reliable, which was was of great benefit to the company during and after World War II. Many competitors and rival companies selling knock-offs of the D-type engine were beginning to appear. One of these competitors was a company called Petter Diesels who would eventually be purchased by British aircraft manufacturer Hawker Siddeley in 1957. In 1965, Lister itself was purchased by Hawker Siddeley and the new company was called Lister Petter. Lister Petter continues today, manufacturing diesel industrial engines, as well as components and replacement parts for their original line of engines.
