Starters for Acura Vehicles

Acura is the luxury and performance division for Japanese auto manufacturer, Honda. Since their 1986 North American debut, Japan’s first-ever dedicated luxury brand achieved immediate success with the Legend full-size executive sedan and the compact Integra 3 and 5-door hatchback. Acura’s instant success and sales dominance saw them outselling traditional American luxury marques Cadillac and Lincoln, as well as high-end German imports from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Even rival Japanese manufacturers Toyota and Nissan wanted a piece of the action and soon created their own respective sub-brands, Lexus and Infiniti, in response. Acura’s brand of luxury greatly differed from American ideals. Whereas American luxury cars were often badge-engineered duplicates of lower-cost vehicles with little mechanical difference and sold at higher prices, many Acura models were actually imported “Japanese-only” cars that were not available in regular Honda dealerships. These JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) vehicles include the Vigor and the NSX supercar, the latter featuring Honda’s brand new VTEC engine technology. As trends in the luxury car segment were beginning to shift away from decadent disconnect to pure driving enjoyment, Acura began to place greater emphasis on performance and garnered a strong and loyal customer base within the emerging “tuner” scene. This cemented Acura’s identity in the market as a brand that bridges the gap between sporty cars and entry-level luxury. In the current model lineup, Acura offers 3 sedans--the ILX, TLX, and RLX; 2 SUVs--the RDX and MDX; and the returning NSX supercar--now reimagined for the 21st century as an electric-hybrid.
