Brake Cables for ATVs & UTVs

When you’re tearing down a forest trail headlong and you need to dodge some cumbersome obstacle like a fallen log, a large rock, or a sudden sharp bend or if you’re on the racetrack and you need to outbrake going into the turn in order to overtake the leader, brakes are a good thing to have. But while most think of the common brake performance as upgraded rotors and pads (we sell those, too), the brake cables themselves are often overlooked. Ironic, considering that they’re directly responsible for proper brake function.

ATVs and UTVs can use cables to actuate the brake calipers or wheel cylinders (if equipped with drums), similar to a bicycle or a motorcycle. The cable itself is a tightly-wound rope of braided steel wire that is coated in a protective rubber or plastic sheath. Over time, regular use can cause the cables to stretch and severe riding conditions can lead to the cable sheath to deteriorate. In the most extreme cases, the cable can bend or snap thus, rendering the brakes useless. When it comes time to perform maintenance service your ATV braking system, always be sure to inspect the brake cables for excessive slack or physical defects such as fraying or damage to the outer sleeve.
