Starters for Jaguar Vehicles

The Jaguar marque is synonymous with classic English luxury. Originally founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, the company manufactured high-end, premium sports saloons and 2-seater roadsters. After World War II, Swallow Sidecar--now called S.S. Cars--changed their name (and rather unfortunate-looking company logo) to Jaguar, once a Swallow Sidecar sports saloon model. Jaguar would merge with the British Motor Corporation in 1966, becoming British Leyland, until separating in 1984. Jaguar’s meticulously-crafted sports saloons and coupes were among the very first cars to combine luxury and performance, a standard practice within the modern market. Royalty, dignitaries, celebrities, and the well-heeled were drawn to the sleek XK120 roadster, sumptuous XK150 touring car, and the futuristic E-Type 2-seat roadster. Jaguar was also a commanding force in European motorsport, scoring major victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the C-Type and D-Type, and winning the European Touring Car Championship in 1984. In spite of Jaguar’s racetrack success and appeal among the affluent, the brand struggled to compete against BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury import segment. In 1990, the Ford Motor Company purchased Jaguar and reinvigorated their product lineup with the aide of designer Ian Callum from another newly-acquired Ford property, Aston Martin. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s, Jaguar came back with a vengeance with the exotic XJ220 supercar (which, in 1992, held the title as the world’s fastest production car), XJ luxury grand tourer, and XK sports coupe. In 2008, Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to India’s Tata Motors, forming Jaguar Land Rover. Today, the brand continues to build upon the technological and stylistic advancements of the 90s, as well as honor their heritage in motorsports with new, groundbreaking performance luxury models like the F-Type, the spiritual successor to the storied 1960s E-Type.
