AMC Alternator

In order to survive against General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler--the “Big Three” automotive juggernauts in Detroit, two classic American automobile brands Nash (makers of the Nash Rambler) and Hudson (makers of the Hudson Hornet) merged together to form American Motors Corporation in 1954. At the time, it was the largest corporate merger in U.S. history. Led by George W. Romney, AMC realized that they were too small to compete against industry giants like GM and Ford so instead, the company went against the grain and marketed technological innovations and advancements. Many of AMC’s vehicles were ahead of their time. They pioneered fuel-efficient compact cars 20 years before the 1970s Arab Oil Embargo forced the “Big Three” to eschew horsepower numbers for MPGs. They introduced the first fastback personal luxury car, the 1965 Marlin, a year before Chrysler’s similarly-shaped Dodge Charger made its debut. They also brought military-grade off-road capability with the Jeep brand (purchased from Kaiser-Jeep in 1970) and created the first-of-its-kind, 4X4 crossover wagon in the 1979 Eagle. AMC had also enjoyed success in the bustling new muscle car segment of the mid-to-late 60s into the 70s with the Javelin and AMX. The Javelin had actually scored two consecutive SCCA Trans-Am championship titles, usurping the throne from former track kings the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and Ford Mustang Boss 302. In 1988, AMC was bought out by Chrysler but its spirit continues to live on in FCA’s Jeep division.
