BMW Alternator

Alternator for BMW Marine Engines

After the first World War in 1919, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) acted upon their interest in marine engines and began producing them themselves. However, the success of their Model 410 and 411 engines, which were based off of their 2 liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline automotive engine, led BMW to open up a specialized marine engine division 58 years later in 1977. BMW Marine had collaborated with Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen, a well-known engineer and supplier of automotive parts, to create the BMW marine Z-Drive, a sterndrive unit that utilized multiple wet clutches. This was a unique feature that helped put BMW Marine in direct competition with industry leaders Volvo Penta and Mercury’s Mercruiser. BMW Marine went on to build air cooled diesel marine engines such as the D7, D12, D35, and D50 and later, while sourcing engines from Italy’s VM Motori, developed their new line of marine engines based off of the VM HR.H 692. In 1987, BMW closed down their marine engine division which was then sold to Mercury Marine.
